Formal Diagnostic testing

What a dyslexia assessment involves

The diagnostic process for dyslexia is significantly detailed and, prior to the day of assessment, requires an input from parents and school. The person being assessed will need to have had a recent eye test completed and if they need a prescription for glasses, they will need to be wearing the new glasses at the time of assessment.

When an assessment is for an adult, an input is just required from the person having the assessment..

On the day of the assessment, a specialist assessor of dyslexia will meet the learner and begin using a battery of assessments which involve investigating underlying verbal and visual ability, working memory, processing speed, phonological awareness, reading, writing and spelling ability of an individual. These tests take approximately 2 to 3 hours with the learner having breaks as required.

Once the assessments have been completed, a comprehensive report will be written and sent to you 3 weeks after the assessment.

What's included in your diagnostic report.

Your diagnostic report is far more than a set of scores. It is a comprehensive, easy-to-understand document that explains how your brain processes information and what this means for learning, study or work. Every report is written with care, clarity and precision so you walk away knowing exactly what your strengths are, where the barriers lie and what to do next.

A clear conclusion

The report confirms whether dyslexia is present and outlines the specific profile of strengths and difficulties that led to the conclusion. This gives you the clarity many people have been seeking for years.

Standardised assessment results

All reading, spelling, writing, memory and processing tasks are presented with standardised scores. These are explained in plain English so you understand what each measure shows about your learning profile.

Strengths and areas of difficulty

The report highlights cognitive and literacy strengths, alongside areas that require support. This balanced profile is essential for building confidence and planning effective next steps.

Detailed interpretation of findings

Every section includes explanation of what the results mean day-to-day—for example, how phonological difficulties might affect reading accuracy, or how processing speed can impact study or workplace tasks.

Impact on learning, work and daily life

We connect the assessment findings to real situations. This helps parents, adults and employers understand how dyslexia shows up in practical terms.

Tailored support strategies

You’ll receive personalised recommendations, including:

  • Study or revision strategies

  • Classroom or workplace adjustments

  • Memory and organisation supports

  • Approaches to reduce overwhelm and improve confidence

These strategies make a genuine difference and can be used straight away.

Guidance for parents, teachers and employers

The report includes clear advice on how others can support you—whether that’s a teacher adapting classroom tasks, an employer providing adjustments or a university meeting DSA requirements.

Exam Access Arrangements / workplace adjustments

Where relevant, the report outlines eligibility for:

  • JCQ Exam Access Arrangements

  • DSA applications

  • Workplace reasonable adjustments

This helps ensure you receive the appropriate support in education or employment.
